Role & Responsibilities


John Owens is an Executive Director over Land, Investment, and Retail transactions with Cushman & Wakefield | Commerce. He is a specialist in site selection, due diligence management and evaluation, entitlements, elements of construction and development, space leasing, and disposition of various assets. John has also represented both institutional and entrepreneurial landowners and developers beyond retail uses, including offices, multifamily, automotive uses and others.


Work Experience


John Owens made his escape from the practice of law to real estate brokerage nearly twenty years ago. Since then has devoted his time to all aspects of the industry, incorporating his legal background to better serve his clients. John’s twelve years’ legal experience prior to his brokerage career include five years as General Counsel to a regional development firm and seven years of private practice in the real estate industry. During that time, John was involved in complex financing and development issues on office, retail, and multi-family residential projects. John’s legal background in this arena provides a rare depth of real estate understanding. His experience assists greatly in John’s ability to orchestrate smooth resolutions to challenges in most real estate transactions. Owens also possesses special expertise in the area of tax free 1031 exchanges and is experienced in assisting institutional investors, companies, and individuals in identifying and securing appropriate real estate investments.

Owens earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1979 from the University of Utah, where he also was awarded his Juris Doctorate three years later. He is a member of the American Bar Association.
