U.S Citizen and Immigration Services to Move Downtown

August 4, 2010, Salt Lake City, UT – U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) will be moving its offices downtown to occupy a portion of a 100,000 square foot building on 660 South 200 East. The location was previously home to Mountain America Credit Union. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has signed a 15-year lease on behalf of the USCIS. The structure will now undergo improvements and should be finished by mid-2011, when 45 current employees will move in. The USCIS offices are currently located in Murray.

USCIS wanted to relocate to a more central location with abundant and easy access to mass transit and the freeway. Landlord improvements to the building include a new “grand lobby” and updated common areas. The remaining space, 49,000 square feet, remains available for lease and new tenants will benefit from the construction upgrade. Additionally, organizations and businesses that assist government entities sometimes prefer close proximity to their clients or the population their clients serve.

James M. Burgess of The Burgess Company represented the building’s landlord in negotiating the lease awarded by GSA. Dana Baird & Mike Richmond of Commerce Real Estate Solutions work in concert with James M. Burgess to lease the space.

This move, according to Dana Baird, “represents the bigger trend of overall redevelopment in this general downtown location.” Other new government locations in the planning stages include a new United States District Federal Courthouse and Salt Lake City’s new Public Safety Building and Emergency Operations Center.
