Utah’s Economy: Employment and Population Centers in Salt Lake and Utah Counties

uteconA few years ago, University of Utah Bureau of Economic and Business Research (now a part of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute) reported on Salt Lake County’s employment center, and its geographic proximity to the county’s population center. Demographic mean centers are important for understanding current market conditions and trends. They can be visualized as the center of gravity a waiter focuses her/his fingers to balance a tray of food – the edge of the tray represents the market’s boundaries; the waiter’s fingers represent its population densities; and the food balanced on the tray are the market’s jobs, given equal weight throughout.
